Ottawa Senators Acquire Mikkel Boedker From San Jose for Mike Hoffman, Sharks Flip Hoffman to Florida
Within hours, the Sharks flipped Hoffman to Florida for picks
The Ottawa Senators have kicked off their trade season with a bang, sending left winger Mike Hoffman to the San Jose Sharks in exchange for Mikkel Boedker. The Ottawa Senators also acquire a 2020 6th round pick and defensive prospect Julius Bergman in the deal, while also giving up their 2020 5th round pick.

Hoffman, who had inserted himself as the Sens’ first line winger since his rookie season in 2014-15, has been with the Ottawa Senators’ organization for nine years. A former player of Guy Boucher’s in junior for Drummondville, Hoffman’s career highlights include a QMJHL Championship in 2009, a Calder Cup championship in 2011, a nod to the AHL’s first All-Star Team in 2014 and a career high 61 points in 2017.
The focus of this trade, however, lies in the off-ice controversies between his fiancée Monika Caryk, and Melinda Karlsson, wife of the Senators’ star captain. Karlsson has filed a protection order against Caryk and requested a peace bond, after Caryk allegedly carried out a campaign of online harassment against the Karlssons. Although there have been rumours of a Hoffman trade going back for a while, they’ve been running especially rampant since the information has gone public.
From Pierre Dorion’s statement:
“Today’s trade showcases our determination to strengthen the future of the team by improving chemistry, leadership and character in the locker room and on the ice. We are confident it is a step in the right direction for the long-term success of this organization,” said Senators general manager Pierre Dorion.”
Coming back from the Sharks, the Senators acquire Mikkel Boedker, a 28-year-old left winger who is just starting the second half of his four-year contract. He scored a career-high 51 points with the Phoenix Coyotes in 2013-14, and last season was on a pace for 41 points while missing eight games with an undisclosed lower-body injury. You may remember his name distinctly for scoring a two hat tricks against the Senators in the 2015-16 season. He is also the second highest scoring player from Denmark in the history of the NHL.
The Sens also acquire prospect Julius Bergman, a 22-year-old right shot defenceman drafted 46th overall in 2014. With one year left on his entry-level contract, he scored 20 points in 65 games last season for the San Jose Barracuda.
Financially, the Sens gain an extra $1.2 million in cap space, although because Boedker is on a front-loaded contract while Hoffman’s is back-loaded, they save a total $5.3 million in real dollars with the trade.

Update
The Sharks have flipped Hoffman and a 7th round pick in this year’s draft to Florida in return for the Panthers’ 2nd round pick in 2019 and their 4th and 5th round picks from this draft. So now in addition to debating if the Senators got enough from San Jose in the trade, we can also debate if San Jose got a better return 2 1⁄2 hours later.
Panthers GM Dale Tallon has gone on the record saying the package he sent to San Jose was not offered to Ottawa for Hoffman. There were discussions, but he indicated that the Senators were looking for something different in return and he felt the price was too high.
Tallon said he didn't really have a match with the #senators in terms of what they were looking for. Also, “What happened there is in the past,” he said of the Karlsson/Hoffman situation.
