Filip Chlapik Signs One-Year Extension With Ottawa

Giving another prospect the chance to prove themselves as a full-time NHLer, the Ottawa Senators have signed Filip Chlapik to a one-year, two-way extension.

The 23 year-old will earn $735K in the NHL next season, and $70K in the AHL.

“Filip’s a competitive player who works hard,” said GM Pierre Dorion via a team-issued statement. “He has applied himself to becoming an important player for us in Belleville. We’re confident that same work ethic will be equally as effective for him as he strives to become the same type of player in Ottawa.”

In a 2019-20 season split between Ottawa and Belleville, Chlapik produced at a career-best clip in both leagues. He scored 10 goals and 12 assists for 22 points in 37 games with the B-Sens, and tallied three goals and three assists in 31 games with the big club. His possession metrics with Ottawa in particular were impressive, as the Prague native posted a 50.99% Corsi rating, and his all-around game showed noticeable improvement.

For Chlapik, this could likely be classified as a make-or-break season. If he wants to earn an one-way contract with Ottawa, or convince the Seattle Kraken to take a chance on him through the expansion draft, he will need to solidify himself as an NHL player. In a season where there will likely be opportunities a-plenty, Chlapik will have to carve out a role, and prove himself to be relatively indispensable.

In Chlapik, the Senators lock up another of their restricted free agents, and keep a valuable depth player, with some decent upside on the roster. In a season where they’ll be reliant on the young guns to step up, the Sens will have plenty of candidates to do so.

Christian Jaros is the last remaining RFA to be extended. He has filed for arbitration, with his hearing scheduled for November 7th.
