Game 20 Hub: Vancouver Canucks @ Ottawa Senators
Another attempt to right the ship at home on Thomas Chabot bobblehead night
In the last 20 games they've played against each other, the Vancouver Canucks are 15-4-1 against the Ottawa Senators. They've scored more than five goals against Ottawa in five of their last six games.
If Mike Yeo and Travis Green knew how to coach against the Senators, it'll be curious to see if they're able to coach against their former club tonight as the Sens aim to end their longest losing streak of the season.
Lineups:
Travis Green shuffled his lines at practice this morning in hopes of generating more 5-on-5 offence than the team was able to muster against Vegas. We expect Linus Ullmark to start in goal, while Travis Hamonic comes back in for Jacob Bernard-Docker:
The Canucks are coming off a 4-3 loss to the New York Rangers on Tuesday. Here's how they lined up, with their starting goaltender still unconfirmed for tonight:
Game Notes:
- The Canucks are missing their starting goaltender (Demko) and two top-six forwards (Boeser, Miller). It's led to expanded roles for Kiefer Sherwood and Pius Suter, and an opportunity for the Sens to take advantage of what's usually a quite dangerous top-six unit.
- Despite struggling to generate dangerous chances at 5-on-5 and on the powerplay, the Canucks continue to outscore their problems – generating 54 goals on 46.8 xG.
- On the flipside, despite strong 5-on-5 defence and decent shot suppression rates on the penalty kill, their makeshift tandem of Arturs Silovs and Kevin Lankinen have been a bit leaky, letting in 55 goals on 47.6 xG. Lankinen has been the better netminder and signed in Vancouver after a strong couple seasons in Nashville, so if you're hoping to avoid a goaltender, it would be him.
- When Quinn Hughes and Filip Hronek are on the ice at 5-on-5, the Canucks generate around 60% of the shots and expected goals. Next up? Erik Brännström, who continues to play well at 5-on-5 – ~56% CF% and ~58% xGF%. The pairing of Tyler Myers and Carson Soucy, however, have been one of the worst in the league.
- With the line shuffling, it'll be interesting to see if Brady Tkachuk will be able to resurrect Shane Pinto at 5-on-5 after a successful spell together during the back-half of last season. I'll be watching Josh Norris closely to see if he continues to struggle with the territorial play away from his captain.
For those attending the game in-person, the first 10,000 in attendance will receive a Thomas Chabot bobblehead. For those watching on TV, you can catch the game at 7:00pm ET on CBC, Sportsnet Pacific, Sportsnet One, and TVA Sports 2.
