Hayes’ Struggles, Eichel’s Salary, A New Day in the AHL and more
Monday’s Edition of the Links, News and Notes
The season is well under way and we can finally have some more hockey to talk about. However, outside of the on-ice drama, what else is going on in the hockey world this week? Let’s dive in with what’s happening around the league this fine Monday morning.
- Jimmy Hayes’ death a few weeks ago came as a shocker to his family, friends and fans. There were no clear signs of what caused his sudden death but details are slowly coming out. His wife and father have released information confirming his death was a result of a drug addiction problem. His father is sharing Jimmy’s story with the world in hopes he can shed light to the problem and maybe help others who are struggling.
- I don’t know what’s more bizarre, the fact that Jack Eichel is still a Buffalo Sabre or the fact that the Sabres have started this season with back to back wins. If it wasn’t already difficult to move the franchise center, the Sabres have now specifically said they would not retain any salary in any potential trade. Is this supposed to make him more attractive?
- A historic day in the AHL and a great day for hockey in general, Katie Guay became the first woman referee in an AHL game. This opens the door to showcasing women's’ hockey talents in all areas of the game on a pro level.
- Speaking of growing the game, Puerto Rico seems to be making some noise in the United States with its emerging hockey talents. Last Thursday they started off their journey with a win over Chile in the Amerigol Latam tournament and a few days later climbed their way to the championship against Colombia. Could we see some more teams entering the Olympics discussions for women’s hockey soon?
- In some sad news, hall of fame defenseman Leo Boivin who was best known for his exquisite hip check has passed away at the age of 90. He played 19 seasons in the NHL, 12 of which he spent with the Boston Bruins.
- Cam Atkinson is quickly becoming a fan favourite in Philadelphia, or should I say Grandma Atkinson is? Last Friday, Cam Atkinson made his debut with the Philadelphia Flyers and his biggest fan was in attendance and made it an even more memorable game for everyone involved. Not only was she proudly wearing her jersey with her grandson’s name facing forward, she also took to the zamboni in the second intermission to welcome all the fans in attendance./
