Links, News, and Notes: Fedotov Returns, Quick's Milestone, Doan's Hot Start, and more!
Links, news, and notes about Ivan Fedotov returning to Philadelphia, Jonathan Quick setting a record, Josh Doan's dream start, and more
Links, news, and notes to start your week:
- Jonathan Quick won on Saturday, giving him 392 for his career, which made him #1 on the all-time American goalies wins list. The previous record holder was Ryan Miller with 391, although you can bet that Connor Hellebuyck will make a run for it, considering he has 270 already.
- Philadelphia Flyers goalie Ivan Fedotov has joined the team after having his KHL contract terminated. He is eligible to play in the playoffs if they make it, and it seems like he'll get a chance alongside Samuel Ersson. Fedotov was forced to serve in the Russian military and was not allowed to come to North America, which must have been very challenging for him. He had a .914 SV% for CSKA Moscow, although he's had even better seasons in the past, so the 27-year-old could make a difference.
- Shane Doan's son, Josh Doan, is off to a phenomenal start to his career in Arizona. He has 2 goals and 3 assists in 3 games so far, which is a dream start for him.
- Ryan Hartman will have a Player Safety hearing on Monday for his unsportsmanlike penalty where he obviously said something bad, but we're not sure what.
- Rob Rossi of The Athletic details the incredible story behind the lost (and found) Jaromir Jagr bobbleheads. It's quite hilarious and great that fans got their bobbleheads after all.
- The other writers from The Athletic revisit their bold predictions from the beginning of the season to see if they came close at all. Ian Mendes' prediction was unfortunately dead in the water very early on...
- The Cincinnati Cyclones featured the first ever starting lineup with all players of colour. I'm not going to lie, the photo and tweet seemed a bit performative, but at the same time, it's very cool to see that kind of representation.
- The two Canadian ECHL teams, the Newfoundland Growlers and the Trois-Rivières Lions, could be shut down due to lack of payments. Even if operations are suspended for both teams, there is still optimism that something can be worked out for next season though. If they have to move cities, I feel for the fans that love watching their teams up close.
- Elliot Lake, Ontario won Kraft Hockeyville 2024, meaning they will receive $250,000 towards arena upgrades, $10,000 worth of hockey equipment, and they will also host an NHL pre-season game this September. It's cool that after all these years, towns across Canada continue to receive financial support through Hockeyville. Hockey means so much to people across the country, and I love seeing the reactions of the winning communities.
- Lastly, here's another feel-good story of a U16 San Jose Jr. Sharks girls team that is incredibly diverse and seeing a lot of success on the ice. It's great to see more girls playing hockey, as well as more inclusion in the sport too, and it seems like this team from San Jose takes pride in their diversity. The promotion of these kinds of stories will hopefully continue to get others interested as well.
