Links, News, and Notes: Tortorella Suspended, "Wild" Goal, Landeskog's Health, and more!
Links, news, and notes on John Tortorella's tirade, Minnesota's "Wild" goal, Gabriel Landeskog making a comeback, and more!
The Sens had a disappointing week so we're just not gonna talk about that right now. Instead, here are some links, news, and notes from over the weekend!
- John Tortorella was ejected early from the Philadelphia Flyers game on Saturday, and then he refused to leave. He obviously did eventually go, but he was fined $50,000 and suspended for two games for that tirade. The NHL hasn't said what Tortorella did to get ejected, which should be disclosed for the sake of clarity, but it won't because of the course the NHL will never do simple things like this properly. I'm not sure if the ejection was worthy or not, but personally I thought it was incredibly childish to not leave.
- The Minnesota Wild scored one of the most unconventional goals you'll ever see. They pulled Marc-Andre Fleury near the end of overtime in order to have the skaters on 4-on-3. However, the rule says that if you pull your goalie (excluding delayed penalties) in overtime and lose the game, you also lose the overtime point and get 0 points. The Wild took a massive risk and it paid off, with Matt Boldy scoring the game-winner pretty quickly. I can't say I even knew that rule existed and apparently neither did some of the players.
- Colorado Avalanche captain Gabriel Landeskog hasn't played a game since the Stanley Cup Final in 2022, and it's been scary to think about his health this whole time. However, Jared Bednar is saying that he could play in the upcoming playoffs. Whether that is Game 1 or later is unclear, but it's great to hear that he's an option down the line.
- On the flip side, Avalanche forward Logan O'Connor will be out for the rest of the season with a hip injury. The 27-year-old was having a career year with 25 points in 57 games.
- In a feel-good story, Washington Capitals prospect Ivan Miroshnichenko scored his first NHL goal. He was diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma in 2022, but he overcame that and has been an inspiration to many. He even got a call from Mario Lemieux in 2022, certainly a good motivator for him to keep staying positive.
- Considering the trade deadline was on Friday and people discussed the deals then, I'll spare everyone from in-depth trade talk, but if you missed any of the deals, you can find them all here on CapFriendly. The Sens, as you know, were quiet.
- The Athletic has excellent trade deadline coverage: firstly, with Pierre LeBrun discussing how the Golden Knights, Hurricanes, Jets, and Avalanche did so well. Secondly, the staff give a grade to each 32 teams. Lastly, Shayna Goldman goes in-depth on each trade.
- Thatcher Demko left the game against the Winnipeg Jets on Saturday, and it's unclear how long he'll be out for (if at all). Demko has been phenomenal for the Canucks this season with a .917 SV%, although they have a big lead that should be somewhat easy to hold for the rest of the season.
- Let's finish it off with an AHL shootout winner that makes me think of Marek Malik:
