- Labour Day weekend started on a tragic note for hockey fans as news of the passing away of Johnny Gaudreau and his brother Matthew began to circulate. It was the eve of their sister's wedding day and as they rode their bikes together, a drunk driver lost control and recklessly took their lives.
- The pouring of messages from shocked teammates and friends all around the league was heartwarming but nothing matched the heartbreaking tributes from his wife shedding a light on the type of husband and father he was but also beautifully capturing his relationship with his brother who he shared every moment with and couldn't bear bring this world without him.
- The Carolina Hurricanes and budding star Seth Jarvis agreed to an 8-year contract extension worth $7.4 AAV. Signing your star player is expected in most scenarios but what's interesting with this extension is that Jarvis has agreed to defer some of his salary which reduces the cap hit of his contract by about $400,000 a year. It will be interesting to see if this becomes a trend among big contracts and how it could potentially be a hot topic for the next CBA negotiations.
- Latvia, Denmark and Slovakia are the latest nations to qualify for the men's 2026 Olympics Hockey tournament which will be held in Italy. No formal decision has been made yet on the participation of the Russian team.
