Links, news, and notes to start your week!
- The Winnipeg Jets won again on Saturday, bringing their record to a historic 14-1-0. That is the best record in NHL history through 15 games, which is quite the accomplishment. But as we've seen with previous iterations of the Jets, all that matters is if that translates to the playoffs.
- The NCAA has voted to allow CHL players to transfer from the CHL to the NCAA at any time. It used to be that if you even played in a pre-season CHL game, you were ineligible to ever play in the NCAA. Ryan Kennedy of The Hockey News has a good breakdown of what this could mean for the future of prospects playing in various North American leagues.
- Dante Fabbro was placed on waivers by the Nashville Predators over the weekend and was then claimed by the Columbus Blue Jackets. The Blue Jackets were seventh in the waiver order, so he didn't get very far. The 26-year-old defenseman is signed until the end of the season for $2.5M, so it was a bit of a hefty price for a team to take on, but he's still proven he is an NHL defenseman. The Blue Jackets also have $19M in project cap space after making the claim.
- Daniel Sprong played just nine games as a Vancouver Canucks after signing there over the summer, and now he is a member of the Seattle Kraken again. He was traded to Seattle for future considerations after it seemed like Rick Tocchet wasn't exactly loving how he was fitting into the lineup. Sprong continues to bounce around but has had a very successful previous two seasons, and has more than 350 career NHL games.
- This weekend has been the Hockey Hall of Fame celebration weekend, with the actual inductions happening tonight. Pavel Datsyuk, Jeremy Roenick, Shea Weber, David Poile, Colin Campbell, Natalie Darwitz, and Krissy Wendell will get the honours tonight, and NHL.com talked to all of them on Friday about the festivities. I don't know about you, but I think one of those names is not like the others...
- As we all know, Linus Ullmark played his first game in Boston last night after being traded to the Ottawa Senators. He was able to get the win, which must have been extra sweet for him. The bromance between him and Jeremy Swayman is still there, which has always been so wholesome. The Bruins faithful still have a lot of love towards Ullmark as well because how could you not?
- Brock Boeser was injured during Thursday's game against the Los Angeles Kings thanks to a dirty hit from Tanner Jeannot (that got him suspended three games). Now Boeser is out indefinitely with an "upper body injury," although we can all guess that it is a concussion. It's awful seeing hits like that one which clearly target the head. It's also frustrating considering Jeannot threw the questionable hit that put Artem Zub out of the lineup for 3 weeks. Not punishing a concussive hit led to another, worse concussive hit.
- The GM meetings happen on Tuesday in Toronto, and Sportsnet talks about what could be on the docket including things such as replay reviews and playoff rosters.
- The writers at The Athletic give their 2.0 predictions after a month of games, with some pretty big changes in certain areas.
- The Florida Panthers have won seven straight games, and you know what their secret might be? The bathrobes they're wearing to the games. Don Cherry must be fuming.
