Monday LNN: Live to Fight Another Day
We've made it to Week 2 of the Play-offs!
The Ottawa Senators are still alive. After a thrilling 4-3 overtime win over the Toronto Maple Leafs, the Sens have bought themselves a chance at a Game 5 on Tuesday night in Toronto. Personally I'm not quite letting myself fully believe they're coming back, but I was also among the thousands chanting "Sens in 7!" as I exited the Canadian Tire Centre on Saturday. So you could say I'm ready to throw myself headlong into the belief that the Leafs are primed to choke this away.
- Over at TSN, Travis Yost takes a look at the performance of some of the top lines in the play-offs. And while it pains me to admit it, it's definitely the case that the Auston Matthews-Mitch Marner-Matthew Knies trio has been running roughshod. If Ottawa wants to prolong the series, cooling them off, even just a little bit, would go a long way.
- I don't have much to add, but this is just a cool way to visualize Game 4:

- Alex Adams has a pretty comprehensive write-up of the key take-aways from Game 4. I will echo his shout-out to Tyler Kleven, who had some good moments (particularly on that rush that led to the winning goal) and has appeared much more comfortable as the series has worn on. He played 23:01 on Saturday, and it was deserved. With Nick Jensen struggling (maybe with injury), it would be huge if Kleven is able to keep up this level of play.
- Mike Sullivan, the long-time coach of the Pittsburgh Penguins was let go on Monday morning. While Sullivan guided the Pens to Stanley Cup victories in 2016 and 2017, Pittsburgh has now missed the play-offs for three consecutive seasons and look increasingly like they are headed for a total teardown.
- If you are looking for a feel-good moment, Gabriel Landeskog notched a goal for the Colorado Avalanche in Game 4 of their series with the Dallas Stars – nearly three years after his last tally. Landeskog's journey back from chronic right knee trouble is nothing short of inspirational.
- Montreal's had something of a charmed season, but it seems likely that it's about to come to an end with the Washington Capitals now ahead 3-1 in their series. I'm not sure what to make of the Habs since they've spent the whole season getting outshot and outplayed, but there's no denying there's some very promising young talent. Maybe they'll find some way to screw it up yet.
- Shayna Goldman pulls out some key storylines from the first round match-ups over at the Athletic.
- Connor Hellebuyck is having a rough series against the St. Louis Blues and the Winnipeg Jets' season is in jeopardy as a result. A star goalie struggling in the post-season? Feels uncomfortably familiar.
- A mistrial was declared on Friday in the Hockey Canada sexual assault case. A new trial is set to begin today.
