Monday LNN: Miller Rumours, McDavid/Myers Hearings, Goalie Goal, and more!
Links, news, and notes about the JT Miller rumours, Connor McDavid and Tyler Myers getting hearings for a suspension, Alex Nedeljkovic setting a goalie record, and more!
- The entire hockey world has known about the rift between JT Miller and Elias Pettersson for the longest time, although last season it seemed to subside as the team was one of the best in the league and both players had solid seasons. However, with the Canucks outside of a playoff spot and both of them regressing, it seems to have hit a point of no return. Elliotte Friedman reported that Miller was almost scratched on Saturday due to a potential trade to the New York Rangers, but that deal was pulled. Who knows if either one of them will be dealt now, but there's been a ton of smoke over the last few months. Furthermore, Friedman has said the Canucks are allowing teams to talk to Miller.
- Speaking of the Canucks, tempers flared at the end of the game against the Edmonton Oilers on Saturday, as Conor Garland and Connor McDavid got into a tussle which led to a dirty cross-check by McDavid. After that, Tyler Myers cross-checked Evan Bouchard seemingly for no reason. Both players will have an over-the-phone hearing, and we'll probably know today or tomorrow what the punishment will be. I'm thinking 1-2 game suspensions.
- Maxim Tsyplakov of the New York Islanders also faced supplemental discipline, getting suspended for three games due to his headshot on Ryan Poehling.
- I can't believe this is true, but on Friday, Alex Nedeljkovic became the first goalie in NHL history to score a goal and get an assist in the same game. Furthermore, he's the only goalie to score in the NHL, AHL, and ECHL. Goalie goals are always the best.
- If you needed more evidence that Linus Ullmark and Jeremy Swayman still have the purest connection among any two players in the league, take a look at the sign that Ullmark's son made for Swayman while the Bruins were visiting Ottawa.
- The writers at The Athletic give their 4.0 predictions for the rest of the season, with Ottawa being polled at 51.9% to make the playoffs—the highest they've been at compared to the previous three articles. This was also done before their two weekend wins, so I wonder if more people would have voted them in today.
- The Edmonton Oilers signed John Klingberg to a one-year deal with a $1M cap hit, and although he hasn't been good for a number of years, Mark Spector of Sportsnet gives the case for why it's a worthwhile gamble.
- Alex Adams of Sportsnet writes about how both the Washington Capitals and the Ottawa Senators are benefitting from the Jakob Chychrun for Nick Jensen trade.
- Two-time Stanley Cup champion Brent Sutter was elected into the New York Islanders Hall of Fame on Saturday. It's great to see players get recognized for their accomplishments, even if it's seemingly quite late!
