Monday LNN: Two Elias Petterssons, Reaves Suspended, Perron Returns, and more!
Links, news, and notes about another Elias Pettersson playing in Vancouver, Ryan Reaves getting suspended, David Perron returning after a family health scare, and more!
- Ryan Reaves received a 5-game suspension for his illegal check to the head of Darnell Nurse on Saturday. The hit left Nurse with a bloodied head and he is out indefinitely. Nice to see the league taking an incident like this at least kind of seriously for one
- In what is some of the funniest news you'll see this week, the Vancouver Canucks had to place Derek Forbort on the IR so they recalled...Elias Pettersson. No, not that Elias Pettersson — the defenseman. So yes, on Sunday night, the Canucks had two Elias Pettersons in the lineup, which is way more entertaining than the two Sebastian Aho's who are on different teams. It'd be quite fascinating if the defenseman actually makes a name for himself as an NHLer.
- Connor Bedard played his first NHL game in his hometown of Vancouver on Saturday as he was injured when the Blackhawks came last year. Here's his interview on After Hours after the game.
- Martin Necas had 4 points on Sunday, which pushed his point streak to 13 games. The Hurricanes winger is off to an incredible start with 30 points in 17 games, good for 3rd in the NHL.
- Alex Ovechkin also continued his hot start to the season as he recorded a hat trick in Vegas on Sunday. That puts him just 29 goals away from surpassing Wayne Gretzky's record with 65 games to play. It looked a bit far-fetched to get 42 goals coming into this season, but it looks very possible now.
- Alex Adams of Sportsnet has an insightful story about the update of David Perron's newborn baby, Elizabeth. Thankfully it seems like things are going well for her, but it's still a scary time for the Perron family. David played his first game back with the Senators on Saturday.
- Shayna Goldman of The Athletic analyzes how teams (including the Senators) have looked so far after making coaching changes over the summer. Unsurprisingly, she has good things to say about Travis Green and the new assistants.
- Jack Campbell was placed on waivers by the Detroit Red Wings after he was reinstated from the NHL Player Assistance Program. That comes as no surprise, as Campbell is goaltending insurance for them. I hope he is in a good place mentally and physically and that the program has supported him well.
- Oliver Ekman-Larsson and Erik Johnson both played their 1000th NHL game on Saturday, which is quite the accomplishment.
