NHL Trade Deadline: Nick Shore traded to Flames for 7th-round pick

The forward had been acquired in the Dion Phaneuf trade

The Calgary Flames have acquired Nick Shore from the Ottawa Senators for a 2019 7th-round pick.

Shore scored one assist in six games with the Sens, after putting up 15 points in 49 games with the Kings. After being acquired in the Dion Phaneuf/Marian Gaborik trade, fans weren’t sure if he was part of the long-term plans of this team. After a short audition, the Sens decided to trade him to Calgary rather than trying to re-sign the pending RFA in the summer. A 7th-round pick is nothing more than a distant lottery ticket, though lots of recent valuations say picks in the final three or even four rounds have an equal chance of hitting 100 games in the NHL. In the end, it made some sense to get anything back for the player if the Sens had no interest in re-signing him anyway.

This marks the third trade in recent history between these teams, with the Flames acquiring Curtis Lazar at least year’s deadline, and Alex Chiasson in the summer of 2016.
