Ottawa Charge Recap: Week 15
Playoffs???
It's been a pretty disappointing season for the Charge, but thanks to the PWHL's six team league and three point system, they've somehow managed to claw themselves back into playoff contention with just four games left.
It was another week with 1 win and 1 loss. Just enough to make those last few games very, very important.
Last Week: New York 6, Ottawa 3
- In a real 2023-24 Ottawa Senators move, the Charge seem committed to staying just close enough to the playoffs to keep them within reach but losing every game that could make them a real possibility.
- Fresh off a huge blowout win over - and I must stress this point - the worst team in the league by a long shot - the Charge got a chance to run it back, with a weekend rematch against the Sirens.
- They uh. Well. They didn’t beat the Sirens this time. They really didn’t.
- The game started well enough. Normally, even. Ottawa got the first powerplay of the game but didn’t score. They got a penalty of their own a bit under halfway through the first period, and Rebecca Leslie scored her first goal of the season to spring Tejralova from the box. What a great individual effort on her part.

- Emily Clark made it 2-0 soon afterward, taking advantage of a bit of chaos in front of the net, and the Charge went to the locker room in a good position to win the game.

- The second period was pretty uneventful, and Brianne Jenner scored to make it 3-0. What a nice, healthy lead that is really safe and easy to hold on to.

- New York did not waste time in the third period. Right from the start, they made it very clear what was going to happen. The first goal was scored just over a minute in, the next a few minutes later, and the next a few minutes after that. Tie game. Oops?
- Now, usually when a team pulls off a dramatic third period comeback, they stop there. Maybe they finish the job in overtime, or maybe they score one more and leave it at that. It’s called score effects. That’s not what happened here.
- The game was tied before we hit the halfway mark of the third period, and it was 5-3 with about 7 minutes left. The Sirens kindly let up a little bit after that backbreaking goal, finishing the game off with an empty netter.
- Erase that game from my memory, please.
Last Week: Boston 1, Ottawa 2
- The Charge needed a bounceback game after that absolute calamity, and they got one. They took to St. Louis for the takeover tour, which was especially cool for hometown girl Jincy Roese.
- The game was pretty even, as games between the Charge and Fleet tend to be. Boston got the first goal, and although she didn’t get a point on it, our old friend Jamie Lee Rattray was at the scene of the crime, as she always seems to be.
- Hardly anything happened in the second period. The Charge played very well, but didn’t manage to tie things up. Gwyneth Phillips looked great.
- In fact, the Charge wouldn’t score their first goal until there were under 5 minutes left in the whole game. Tereza Vanisova played the hero yet again!

- Boston challenged the goal for a missed stoppage, but unsuccessfully. They were assessed a penalty for the challenge, and Ottawa immediately scored on the powerplay! Guess who got that goal?

- All hail Tereza Vanisova. Truly. Only Maschmeyer has been more important to this team this season.
- This win actually briefly put them in a playoff spot! They now sit just two points out with a game in hand, meaning that, despite how badly the season has gone, they somehow control their own fate.
The Week Ahead
- They play a rematch against Boston tonight, April 2nd, at 7pm. It’ll be the final game of the season between these two teams. Let’s see if it’s another one goal game.
- You can watch on TSN, and there’s no Sens game to interfere with it this time around, so make sure you tune in!
- That’ll be their last game until the end of the month, as the league takes another break. It sure would be nice to head into those last three regular season games already in a playoff spot.
