Ottawa Charge Recap: Week 4

After a frustrating start to the season, the Charge finally got some results, with regulation wins over the New York Sirens and the Toronto Sceptres, and a massive trade in the middle of it. I'm not convinced this team is good enough to make the playoffs, but it's nice to see them banking points.

Last Week: Ottawa 3, New York 1

  • A perfect day for Ottawa hockey teams began with a decisive and much-needed Ottawa Charge victory over the New York Sirens.
  • The Charge looked very good in the first period, and Emily Clark got them on the board first. It must be extra satisfying for her to score on her girlfriend’s team.
  • Brianne Jenner also deserves a ton of credit for the goal, as she was the one who took the initial shot.
  • Ottawa got a lucky break at the start of the second period, when a few mistakes in the Sirens’ zone resulted in New York scoring on themselves, giving Shiann Darkangelo her second goal of the season and doubling Ottawa’s lead.
  • Kateřina Mrázová followed that up shortly with her first goal of the season.
  • The Sirens picked themselves up after that, looking much better for the remainder of the second period, as Ottawa just had to hold on to their lead.
  • When Sarah Fillier got New York on the board just 23 seconds into the third period, it felt like the momentum was shifting. Maschmeyer had her work cut out for her as the Sirens took control of the play for most of the third period, but the Charge managed to hold on to the lead and take home the much needed regulation win.

Last Week: Ottawa 2, Toronto 1

  • This game was full of narratives, because it started less than 24 hours after the two teams had pulled off a massive trade. Harmon, Scamurra, Larocque and Bach all suited up for their new teams.
  • Basically, Maschmeyer goalie’d the Sceptres, pure and simple. Ottawa looked awful, and they should not have won.
  • Toronto dominated the entire game, but the big highlight was Ronja Savolainen’s second period goal - her first ever in the PWHL! Readers will know by now that the Finnish defender won my heart in the very first game of the season, so I was thrilled to see her score in this one. What a great addition to the team.
  • The Sceptres were so clearly the better team that a comeback felt inevitable heading into the third period. When Vanisova was assessed five and a game for boarding, Toronto took advantage, as Hannah Miller tied the game with just six minutes left in regulation. Completely expected given the way the game had been going.
  • The Charge pulled it off, though! Jincy Roese went end-to-end and danced around the Toronto defenders to score with just over a minute left in the game. What a season she's having.

The Week Ahead

  • They’ve got a rematch against New York tomorrow at 7pm, which will be broadcast on Amazon Prime.
  • Unfortunately, that game will fully conflict with the Sens' matchup against the Red Wings. At least if one team is playing badly, we can always switch over to the other one.
  • The Sirens are just two points ahead of the Charge in the standings. They just absolutely curb stomped Minnesota to the tune of 5-0, so let's hope they got all the goalscoring out of their system last week.
  • After that, the Charge return home for the first time since vacating their arena for the World Juniors to take on the Boston Fleet on Saturday.
  • The game will take place at 2pm at TD Place, and be broadcast on CBC. It will also partially conflict with a Sens game, which will start at 4pm, so it'll be a long day of watching hockey for Ottawa fans.
  • Boston is still struggling a bit to start the season, currently sitting second last in the league, just one point behind Ottawa. They're coming off a shootout win over Montreal at Climate Pledge Arena in Seattle.
