This comes on the back of the news that Lazar's injury sustained in the first period against the Arizona Coyotes was more serious than initially noted.

Calling up Puempel is no surprise, given that he played 13 games last season as a call-up, and likely would have even seen playoff action if not for a high-ankle sprain suffered before the end of the season. In 13 NHL games, he has two goals and an assist. The current number-nine player on our Top 25 Under 25 rankings has 46 goals and 40 assists in 141 career AHL regular season games. He has three goals and two assists in five games this season.
Many were surprised to see Max McCormick called up to replace Mike Hoffman, as most assumed Puempel was first on the depth chart. However, it looks like Dave Cameron wanted to see the look of Lazar in the top six, and didn't want to call up a goal-scorer like Puempel to play spot-duty on the fourth line. However, with Lazar also out, it looks likely that one or both of Puempel and Shane Prince will see regular top-six duty.
