Ottawa Senators Deal Max Veronneau to Toronto Maple Leafs for Aaron Luchuk
Luchuk returns, Ottawa also receives conditional 6th.
With their second trade in as many days, the Ottawa Senators have completed a minor-league deal with the Toronto Maple Leafs, sending winger Max Veronneau to the 6ix, in exchange for former Sens centre prospect Aaron Luchuk.
The swap also contains a sixth-round pick that Ottawa will acquire, if Veronneau plays at least 10 NHL games the rest of the season.
A highly-touted Princeton University prospect, Veronneau was signed by the Senators late last season, scoring two goals and two assists in his first 12 NHL games. This year has been a different story, however, as the 24 year-old has struggled to separate himself from the rest of Ottawa’s prospect pool. Veronneau suited up in four NHL games with no points, and has tallied 10 points in 33 contests with Belleville this season.
Luchuk, on the other hand, is a familiar player for the Sens. Undrafted, he signed with Ottawa in December of 2017, while a member of the OHL’s Barrie Colts. Splitting his time between the Brampton Beast and Belleville Senators, Luchuk scored nine AHL points in 27 games during the 2018-2019 campaign. He was dealt to Toronto on July 1st, 2019, in the package that included Cody Ceci. He has played only three AHL games this season, scoring 49 points in 45 games for the ECHL’s Newfoundland Growlers.
The move provides some reinforcements for Belleville, with Logan Brown expected to be out of action until early March. For Veronneau, it presents an opportunity to play more meaningful minutes for the Toronto Marlies.
The two teams also completed another AHL swap, with Ottawa reacquiring forward Darren Archibald, in exchange for defenceman Trent Borque.
