Senators Draft Defenceman Chandler Romeo with Final Pick of 2021
Another big defenceman to close out the draft
With their sixth and final pick of the 2021 NHL Entry Draft, the Ottawa Senators selected defenceman Chandler Romeo of the Ontario Junior Hockey League’s Brantford 99ers, 202nd overall.
Romeo (pronounced Roh-may-oh), turned 18 just over a week ago, and was a third-round pick of the Ontario Hockey League’s Hamilton Bulldogs in 2019. The 6’5, 205lb left-handed defenceman spent the following season with the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League’s Brantford Bandits, as well as with the OJHL’s 99ers.
Romeo was slated to spend last season with the Bulldogs, before the cancellation of the OHL season. He is expected to carve out a role with Hamilton this fall.
The Cambridge, Ontario native was the Senators’ sixth and final selection of the 2021 draft. All in all, Ottawa made two trades — one up and one down — and came out with right wing Tyler Boucher (USNTDP), centre Zack Ostapchuk (Vancouver, WHL), defenceman Ben Roger (London, OHL), left wing Oliver Johansson (Timra IK, Sweden), right wing Carson Latimer (Edmonton, WHL), and Romeo.
With the draft now complete, Pierre Dorion and Co. will turn their collective attention to re-signing key RFA’s, inking their top picks, and potentially improving the team via trade and/or free agency.
The NHL free agency period opens on July 28th.
