Biggest Standouts

Logan Brown

Logan Brown continues to thrive on the Kitchener Rangers. Brown had three points and 12 shots in three games this week, and is currently fifth in the OHL in points-per-game (1.64). Top-six forwards in the NHL usually score above 1.5 PPG in their final season, and both Brown and Aaron Luchuk (1.67) are above that mark currently. Brown’s 3.68 shots per game is higher than everyone ranked above him other than Luchuk, showing that although Brown’s more of a playmaker, he’s been getting opportunities to fire pucks on net.

If Derick Brassard is traded this week, expect Brown to get an extended opportunity as a top-six NHL centre as soon as next season.

Max McCormick

A sort-of afterthought this season, McCormick is signed to a one-way deal next year and has looked solid in his eight NHL games this season. Always noticeable given his motor, pest-like qualities, and ability to charge the net, McCormick surely looks like a player I’d rather have over Gabriel Dumont at this point. A teammate of Ryan Dzingel at Ohio State, Dzingel assisted on McCormick’s first goal this season. He scored last night on a nice wrist shot, too.

What you can expect from McCormick though are plays like the assist below. First on puck, trying to generate net front attack. It led to a Colin White goal.

Filip Ahl

Also an afterthought after he left Regina (WHL) to go back to Sweden, Ahl’s been playing in the Allsvenskan and his 10 goals in 23 games are already tied for second on his team. Ahl is unsigned, but his future is in question as it’s unknown whether the Sens will try to bring him to Belleville to play in the AHL next season. He’s always had skill, but moves a bit slow for his size and needs to show consistent work ethic night-in, night-out. In my opinion, the Sens need all the young players they can get, and I’d much rather Ahl than a 27+ year old AHL veteran.

Silver Linings

• Aaron Luchuk keeps on scoring, and had nine points in three games this week. He’s also a character player, as showcased in this video played by the Spitfires when Luchuk’s Colts visited. Luchuk was also written about by DobberHockey in a prospect profile. /

• All three goaltenders in action (Hogberg, Driedger, and Daccord) had great weeks. Daccord continues to stand out in the NCAA and is likely two years away; Driedger is clearly too good for the ECHL; Hogberg has been downed by a poor and injured Belleville blueline, but looked good in his two appearances.
• Filip Chlapik and Gabriel Gagné both scored for Belleville, but the team went 1-3 this week.
• Markus Nurmi, who Colin featured last week, continues his hot streak in Liiga and now has six points in seven games this month. He stood out to me on a poor Finnish squad at the World Juniors.
• Nurmi is joined in the system by another Finn: Ville Pokka! He had an assist for Belleville, and provides needed depth on the right-side. /
