Ottawa Senators Prospect Update - November 2nd
Everyone is injured and a couple guys scored goals
Let’s forget about last night’s game and dive right in!
Prospect Team of the Week:
Forwards:
Vitaly Abramov
We always love a visit from an old friend around these parts so thank you Vitaly for putting together an exceptional week in the KHL. With a couple more goals, Abramov has gotten into double digits in points in one of the world’s toughest leagues. He still has the hands and some of us still hold out hope that Abramov will find the missing pieces to his game that will allow him to provide some much-needed depth on the wings in Ottawa one day.

Parker Kelly
I can’t think of many prospects who keep it on brand quite like Kelly. After a couple rough nights in Ottawa that saw him sent back down to the farm, Kelly got right back to work and picked up where he left off in Belleville, setting up plays and taking lots of penalties. He’ll get another shot in Ottawa at some point this season. In the meantime, don’t ever change, Parker.
Egor Sokolov
If the early returns on this season had you worried about the coming season for Ottawa’s prospects and if you needed some sort of normalcy restored in your life, please enjoy the full highlights from Sokolov’s four-point game:
Defence:
Erik Brännström
The points haven’t come easily for a guy who by all accounts should probably have started the season in Ottawa anyway but rest assured, Bonestorm hasn’t slowed down as he has averaged about two shots per game in Belleville while he awaits a Michael Del Zotto or Nick Holden trade to clear his path to ascension. I imagine this first assist of the season opens the proverbial floodgates for the elusive blueliner:

Jacob Bernard-Docker
On the subject of players I would desperately love to see in Ottawa sooner than later, JBD has started looking more comfortable at the professional level and if he, Lassi Thomson, and Maxence Guenette can ever get healthy at the same time, the Sens could finally have a respectable trio of blueliners down the right side:

Goaltender:
As well as Filip Gustavsson played for Ottawa against Dallas last week, and while Kevin Mandolese made nothing less than a Herculean effort in his three starts for Belleville, I wanted to switch it up and shine the spotlight on a newcomer to North America as Leevi Meriläinen seems to have started figuring out his game in the OHL for Kingston. With such a deep team in front of him, Leevi hasn’t had to play very spectacular hockey but I still feel encouraged watching his save percentage improve incrementally as the season progresses.
Silver Linings:
- It looks like centre Philippe Daoust has wrapped up his time in the QMJHL as he has signed a contract with the Belleville Sens. Daoust bolsters Belleville’s depth down the middle and playing in the AHL should bode well as Daoust looked like he needed a new challenge after tearing up the Q last year in an injury-shortened season.
- Further west, Carson Latimer has found himself a bit of a groove and kept things rolling with another goal for WHL Edmonton:/

While in Hamilton of the OHL, one of Ottawa’s deepest cuts, Chandler Romeo scored the first goal of his junior career this past week:

- One of Ottawa’s youngest prospects, Oliver Johansson returned to the SHL this week after a brief stint on Timrå IK’s J20 affiliate.
- Speaking of Sens prospects in Sweden, Eric Engstrand and Viktor Lodin each scored a goal for their respective SHL clubs this past week.
- Another week, another point for arguably Ottawa’s best prospect (given all of the graduations last season) as Jake Sanderson notched an assist and five shots against Penn State on Saturday:/

Infirmary:
- In Ottawa, Shane Pinto remains on the injured reserve.
- In Belleville, Roby Järventie, Thomson, Jonathan Aspirot, Mads Søgaard, and Cole Reinhardt all missed time this week due to injury. Brännström nearly joined all of the aforementioned (plus Angus Crookshank) among Belleville’s injured but somehow managed to skate away unscathed from a questionable hit last week in a game against Cleveland.
- In the NCAA, it appears both Jonathan Tychonick and Luke Loheit missed time recently due to injury as well.
- And finally, in the WHL, Ridly Greig also missed time last weekend after sustaining an injury on Friday./
So if you’re wondering why the numbers this week seem a little underwhelming then I imagine all of these man games lost probably didn’t help the cause.
