Biggest Standouts

Shane Bowers

Ottawa’s first-round pick in 2017 has got off to a hot start to his collegiate career, with four goals in four games. Generally lined up alongside 2018 top pick Brady Tkachuk (brother of Matthew, son of Keith), Bowers has been getting most of his goals in front of the net — a good sign that he can use his size to navigate the game against older players in the NCAA.

His four goals (one on the PP) lead the Hockey East conference, and his 3 shots a game is nothing to scoff at either. Colin White — a more highly touted player than Bowers throughout his career — finished his rookie year with 3.51 shots per game, and will continue to be a good comparison for Bowers going forward.

Christian Wolanin

My personal favourite college player currently in the Sens system, Wolanin was drafted as an overager in 2015 and has grown into a top-pair role for North Dakota. Wolanin has three points in four games, and is averaging >4 shots on goal per game. Like Kelly Summers, Shane Eiserman, and Miles Gendron, Wolanin is a contender to be signed after this collegiate year. If he keeps this up, expect this to be an easy decision for Pierre Dorion.

Jordan Hollett

We knew the Sens wanted to take a goalie with one of their 2017 picks, and the one they decided on was ex-Regina Pat, current Medicine Hat Tiger: Jordan Hollett. He missed development camp due to a bad case of mono, and only re-entered the crease recently. His first two games were rough, but he rebounded this week with a 28 save performance on 30 shots.

Silver Linings

• Francis Perron missed both of Belleville’s games last week, and although many initially thought he was scratched, he actually had a case of the flu. Expect him to be back this week and try to rebound from a less-than-impactful start to his second AHL season
• Alex Formenton is back in London, where the team is struggling with a 1-8-0-1 record. Expect him to play in a T6 group featuring Cliff Pu and Robert Thomas.
• Marcus Hogberg was sent down to the ECHL’s Brampton Beast (MTL) to get starts. Interestingly, Habs prospect Michael McNiven is down there too — it’ll be interesting to see if affiliation politics limits his starts/
