Ottawa Senators Prospect Update - October 30th
It's the spookiest prospect update of the season
For anyone hoping for a big breakout from the youngsters in the Ottawa Senators' system, I have some bad news. So far, things seem to have held steady from last season. We still haven't had the second coming of that 2020 draft class and I apologize in advance for another season of what I imagine will involve me digging deep for enthusiasm. Nonetheless, the whole motivation for this exercise lies in the idea that even the latest pick can develop into a gamer, and low probabilities have never stopped us before from dreaming. I also want to quickly note that two prospects in the system (Kevin Reidler and Hoyt Stanley) have yet to play this season, in case you wanted to know what happened to their stats. Neither is injured to my knowledge. Reidler has served as a backup and Stanley's season will start in November.
Notable Performers from the Past Week
Owen Beckner
Colorado won both of their games against Anchorage to keep their record perfect through four games. Beckner scored on the powerplay on Friday to and assisted on the game-winning goal (also on the powerplay) for his first multi-point game of his collegiate career. To me it bodes well that Beckner has already seen powerplay time as a freshman on a ranked team (and that he has made the most of the opportunity so far). We covered Beckner extensively last season during a strong USHL campaign. The jump to college usually helps us to sort out the keepers from the from the rest of the group. So far Beckner looks comfortable.
Gabriel Eliasson
While I hesitate to draw conclusions just two weeks into the season, four of the players I selected this week joined the Senators organization this past summer--maybe Steve Staios knows how to draft. Or maybe players in junior just rack up more points, that also holds true. Either way, Eliasson and the Barrie Colts currently sit second in the OHL's eastern conference and the polarizing defender scored his second goal of the season in a 6-1 thrashing of the abject Guelph Storm. Eliasson showed some pretty good instincts on the play and only had six penalty minutes this week.
Lucas Ellinas
Sitting second in the western conference of the OHL, the Kitchener Rangers got goals from Ellinas in both games of a home and home against the Erie Otters. Ellinas got third star of the game on Friday with a goal in the third period at home (his seventh goal of the season). On Saturday, Ellinas got Kitchener's first goal of the game short-handed. Colour me absolutely shocked that the Senators have another forward in the system who can kill penalties. I like it.
Eerik Wallenius
I should quickly note here that gleaning stats from European junior leagues always provides a bit of a challenge for me as I don't understand Swedish or Finnish and Google translate can only do so much with hockey lingo so I apologize in advance for any gaps in my coverage here. I can tell you that Wallenius added a goal and an assist to his totals this past week for HPK, who won narrowly on Friday and lost more decidedly on Saturday. Wallenius scored HPK's first goal on Friday and assisted their second on Saturday. So far Wallenius leads defenders on his team in scoring so that seems pretty cool.
Carter Yakemchuk
Out west, the Calgary Hitmen have gotten off to a mediocre start despite solid contributions from Yakemchuk. The player on whom the success of the farm system hinges (no pressure though) fittingly had the most productive week of Ottawa's prospects with a goal and three assists in three games. Yakemchuk made the W's weekly highlight reel with a nifty little piece of puckhandling and nice setup that you can check out here.
