Ottawa Senators Report Cards 2015-16: Goalies
The third in our season review series, looking at the Sens' goalies
Our players review series continues with the goalies. Despite injuries playing their toll on the Sens' netminders this year, Craig Anderson and Andrew Hammond covered all but one start, and all but 90 minutes of play for the season.
Craig Anderson
Staff Grade: B (Highest A, Lowest B-)
Reader Grade: B+
Last Year: A-
It's pretty hard to judge Andy's season. On the one hand, a save percentage of .916 and a GAA of 2.78 aren't great starter numbers (36th and 54th respectively among goalies with at least 10 appearances). On the other hand, he faced 1915 shots, second-most in the league. As the third-oldest starter in the league this season (behind Roberto Luongo and Ryan Miller), it's hard to fault a guy for being average while being so busy. Between the lack of defensive support and the fact that his backup was hurt for a lot of the year, it's hard to see this season as representative of Andy's ability.
Andrew Hammond
Staff Grade: B- (Highest B, Lowest C+)
Reader Grade: B-
Last Year: A+
It would've been unfair to expect Hammond to match last year's 21-1-2 record. Injuries derailed his start to the season, and he never seemed to find a groove, finishing with just 21 starts. His .914 sv. pct and 2.65 GAA were fine numbers for a backup, but with Anderson getting older, the Sens may need Hammond to be more than just a steady backup. Hammond actually got 11 of his 21 starts in March and April, so without that end to the season, this year would've likely been seen as far more disappointing.
