Ottawa Senators Round-up: October 15, 2012
You know those "Whatever happened to?" features that celebrity magazines have every few months, where they fill you in on what the cast of Saved by the Bell/The Goonies/Breaker High have been up to lately? This is vaguely like that, but with Ottawa Senators players.
The most difficult part of the NHL lock-out is not being able to watch hockey. The second most difficult part of the NHL lock-out is keeping tabs on where the Ottawa Senators players are and how they are performing. The activity of Senators players runs the complete gamut from American Hockey League to Kontinental Hockey League to, um, Big Rig Brew Pub Hockey League.
With that in mind, here’s a quick summary of where the Senators players are and how they’ve been performing.
EUROPE
Ottawa only has five players who have signed contracts overseas, but it includes the team’s two biggest stars in Jason Spezza and Erik Karlsson. Spezza is off to a modest start with 4 points in 6 games, while Karlsson’s 6 points in 8 games has him tied for 14th in defensemen scoring despite playing far fewer games less than most of his competitors:

AHL
The Binghamton Senators line-up includes Jared Cowen and Ben Bishop from last year’s Ottawa Senators, as well as numerous other players who were expected to be in the running for spots on the big club’s roster this season, including Mark Stone, Jakob Silfverberg, Mika Zibanejad, Mike Hoffman, Mark Borowiecki, and Robin Lehner. The team won its first game of the season 2-1 in large part due to big performances from Silfverberg and Lehner.

THE LOST BOYS
With only five players in Europe and a handful in the AHL, that leaves a lot of other Senators players unaccounted for. After consulting with our inside sources, we can provide the following updates:
Daniel Alfredsson: Currently disappointed.
Craig Anderson: Riding an African Safari Sled. Spending more time with his kids.
Colin Greening: Busy being the subject of every sports story written about the lockout in Newfoundland.
Guillaume Latendresse: Taking part in the Tournée des joueurs in Quebec.
Mark Methot: Taking boxing lessons.
Milan Michalek: After a bit of a delay, he's locked out like everyone else.
Chris Neil: Suggesting we should lock the owners and Player's Association in a room until they figure things out.
Jim O'Brien: Not sure, but someone with his name is writing about free-draining farms for an Irish newspaper. Must be him. I doubt there are many O'Briens in Ireland.
Chris Phillips: Presumably drunk.
Peter Regin: Still waiting to go back to Denmark.
