Senators sign forward Andrew Sturtz to two-year ELC
The Carleton Place native is Penn State’s all-time leading scorer
The Senators have signed college forward Andrew Sturtz to a two-year, entry-level contract per the team’s website. The 185-lb, 5’ 8” RW finished the year with 40 points in 37 games for Penn State, following up 37-point and 27-point campaigns from the previous two years. His 54 career goals leave him as the highest goal-scorer in Penn State history. Despite being born in Buffalo, NY, and playing most of his junior hockey in New York, he actually played two seasons for the Carleton Place Canadians of the CCHL, recording 176 points in 116 games. The local connection likely means he was on the Sens’ radar for a while.
I’m the first to admit I barely follow college hockey, and I’d heard nothing about this guy. He is on the nominees list for the Hobey Baker Award, though there are currently 74 players on that list (including Ryan Scarfo!). It’s hard to know how good he’ll be, but the Sens need AHL depth, and signing a 23 year old who’s shown scoring touch is never a bad thing. Belleville needs more players who aren’t veteran AHLers. What’s interesting to me is that he’s very small compared to the Sens’ usual taste. We’ll see if that ends up being a hindrance for him as he starts his pro career.
