Senators sign first-rounder Lassi Thomson to entry-level contract

The defenceman went 19th overall in the 2019 draft

The Ottawa Senators made their second signing of the day, inking Lassi Thomson to his entry-level contract. The right-handed defenceman was the 19th overall pick in the 2019 NHL draft.

Thomson was projected to go around 37th, but with a run on right-handed defencemen early in the 2019 draft, the Sens decided to get their man rather than risk losing him before the second round kicked off. He has been praised for his puck movement, his skating, and his booming shot, which contributed to him putting up 41 points (17 goals) in 63 games with the WHL Kelowna Rockets last season. He also impressed at the Sens’ rookie camp. Barring a shocking training camp, Thomson will play for Ilves in Finland in 2019-20, and will be expected to have a big role on the Finnish World Junior U20 team.
