Ottawa Senators Sign Mike McKenna to One Year Contract
The journeyman goalie lands himself in Belleville.
Nearly four hours after the start of free agency, the Ottawa Senators have finally made their first signing, picking up goaltender Mike McKenna on a one year, two-way deal. The contract will carry a value of $700,000 in the NHL and $175,000 in the AHL.

McKenna is a journeyman goalie, who has 24 games of NHL experience across five franchises, and 461 games of AHL experience across fourteen franchises. At 35 years old, he may be slightly familiar to Sens fans, as he played 41 games for the Binghamton Senators in 2011-12, posting a .918 save percentage.
McKenna may not yet have an AHL championship, although he’s come really close, making the finals twice in the past two seasons. He was particularly dominant for the Texas Stars in the 2018 playoffs, putting up an impressive .927 save percentage across 22 games.
He joins a goalie group in Belleville that already includes young Swedes Marcus Hogberg and Filip Gustavsson vying for starts. Chris Driedger was also let go last week, after not receiving a qualifying offer. For a team that’s struggled to get consistent goaltending above .900 for the last few seasons, McKenna could potentially be their answer.
