For any Sens fan that’s been living under a rock, Pinto is coming off a monster season at the University of North Dakota where he racked up 15 goals and 17 assists for 32 points in 28 games. He is also one of the three finalists for the Hobey Baker award given out each year to the top NCAA’s top men’s ice hockey player. Pinto was also the NCHC’s Forward of the Year and Defensive Forward of the Year. UND fell to the University of Minnesota-Duluth in the longest game in NCAA hockey history ealier this week, thus ending their season.
Along with Jacob Bernard-Docker, Ottawa has now signed the two UND players that were most likely to join the professional ranks right away. While Tyler Kleven was never a candidate to leave school after just one season, there had been rumblings that Jake Sanderson was considering making the leap but there are now several reports that he will return to UND for his sophomore season.
Both Bernard-Docker and Pinto will report directly to Ottawa where it is expected they will suit up for the Sens once their mandatory seven day quarantine is complete. The two will be flying into Ottawa on the same plane this evening. Given the Sens’ position in the North Division fight for the play-offs, you would expect to see both youngsters get a fair bit of playing time down the stretch.
