Potential NHL Formats, Domi vs Stevens and the Oldest Captain in Hockey History
More cancellations and an odd feud from the past
The sports world may have suspended its games but there is still much to talk about in hockey:
NHL Options
While the near future remains unknown for everyone, many are already speculating what a league return could look like. In an interview with the Athletic’s Pierre LeBrun, Bill Daly stated that they are working hard to ensure that whatever they do this season wouldn’t impact next season’s 82 game schedule. There was a proposal made to the players and the league that would see the Stanley Cup awarded in September and while it seems the players are in favour, it will be interesting to see when the league will have the opportunity to look at this or any other option.
Scott Stevens
In an odd revelation by Tie Domi, the former Toronto Maple Leafs enforcer decided to use his time on the Cam and Strick podcast to bash hall of fame defenceman Scott Stevens. According to Domi, while Stevens gained a reputation for being a tough guy on the ice he in reality was a phony. I guess with not much going in the league, Domi felt the need to assert his former role in the league by stating that other “tough” players refused to fight him. It’s always interesting to see players like Domi and Sean Avery having their own opinions on the more talented players but then again, every player sees the game from a different perspective.
Age Is Just The Number
On a lighter note, while we all fret on our birthdays and worry about getting older others take full advantage of what they can do at any age. In this heartwarming story from Russia, 80-year old Valentina Fyodorova is proud to be the Captain and oldest member of her hockey team “Ustyanochka”.
“After playing on the ice, you feel like you have so much more energy, you feel lighter. You don’t feel those 80 years at all.”
We all knew hockey was magical, but it seems its passion is long lasting and far reaching. May we all age as gracefully as Valentina.
Sens in School Program
Working from home is nice every now and then but sometimes it becomes tiresome, especially for those who have kids they need to keep entertained. The Sens have created a great program for children in grades 1-6 to help keep their minds sharp while they’re away from school. If you have kids who are hockey fans, this will definitely be an easy way to keep them busy while helping them continue to work their brains.
Junior Leagues
What should come as no surprise, the OHL has announced that they will be cancelling the remainder of the regular season. They had previously put a “pause” on the season but the Board of Governors decided that they would rather focus on the playoffs if the season were to come back instead of trying to fit in the remaining 56 games. Both the WHL and QMJHL have followed suit, which gives some players an opportunity to go home and prepare for their draft years or upcoming season.
