Preseason Game 4 preview: Ottawa Senators @ Toronto Maple Leafs

A preview of the preseason game between the Ottawa Senators and Toronto Maple Leafs on 24 September 2013.

The Senators will send a relatively weak lineup to Toronto when they visit the Maple Leafs tonight. Ottawa's entire first line, first pairing, starting goaltender and parts of the second and third line will not play as Paul MacLean continues to experiment in the preseason.

Here are the Sens and Leafs lines tonight courtesy of the Senators website.

Some notes for tonight:

  • With games on three consecutive nights, the Senators chose to keep their best players at home for this one. The Leafs will be missing Phil Kessel and Dave Bolland but will pretty much play their opening night lineup if Cody Franson is not signed. On paper, the Sens should get shredded but look at the roster for the Pens/Hawks game last night. Chicago was leading that game 2-0 until midway through the third period.
  • Jared Cowen will play his first game of the preseason and he should get a good test tonight with the Leafs having a dangerous top six playing. Cowen and Patrick Wiercioch have played a total of 4 minutes and 32 seconds together on 5-on-5 in their careers. Can they develop some chemistry over the final three preseason games that they play?
  • The bottom four on defence looks pretty weak tonight. Hopefully they can hold their own. I for one am excited to finally see Cody Ceci play.
  • Among the forwards, Mark Stone will have his audition for the second line wing position with Kyle Turris and Clarke MacArthur (tonight's first line). One gets the sense that Paul MacLean would prefer to not use Mika Zibanejad here and is hoping one of the other wingers can grab the spot.
  • MacLean has spoken highly of both Stéphane Da Costa and André Petersson recently and they will both get a chance to be on a second scoring line tonight with Colin Greening. Can't really see how these guys can make the team for opening night barring an injury, but they are doing their best to make the coach think about it.
  • Robin Lehner will play the entire game tonight. It might be tough for him with the players in front of him tonight.
  • I don't know if any of the Leafs bottom six are goons, but the Senators brought enough along to start a few fights. Hopefully we see hockey tonight.
