Round 3, Game 5 preview: Pittsburgh Penguins @ Ottawa Senators
A preview of the game between the Ottawa Senators and the Pittsburgh Penguins on May 21, 2017
After their comeback bid fell short on Friday night in Ottawa, the Sens head into Pittsburgh this afternoon with the series tied at two games apiece. The Sens have a record of 4-0 in afternoon games this playoff season, with all four of those wins coming in overtime. The Sens are hoping that the afternoon trend continues if they hope to have a chance to close out the series on home ice on Tuesday.
Lines and pairings are still unconfirmed at this point as the status of Alex Burrows is unclear for the second straight game. Here are the expected lines at this point based on what the team started with in game four.
Stalberg - Turris - Hoffman
MacArthur - Brassard - Ryan
Smith - Pageau - Stone
Dzingel - Wingels - Pyatt
Methot - Karlsson
Phaneuf - Ceci
Claesson - Wideman
Anderson (starter)
Condon
Some notes for tonight:
- While the Sens have been the kings of the comeback this playoff season, the Penguins have a record of 4-0 when leading after the first period, and a record of 8-1 when taking a lead into the third period.
- Thanks in large part to their game three win, the Sens have out-scored in the Penguins 5-1 in first periods this series.
- At home in the playoffs, Matt Murray holds a record of 8-2. The Sens will need to beat the Penguins at least one more time in Pittsburgh if they plan to advance.
- The Sens powerplay has been struggling mightily so far this series, going 0-for-11.
- Today is Craig Anderson's 36th birthday, hopefully the Sens gift him an early lead in this afternoon's tilt. Happy birthday Craig!
- Last year, the Penguins lost game five of the Eastern Conference Final before coming back to win the series in seven games against the Tampa Bay Lightning.
- The Sens have an all-time record of 15-8 in game fives while the Penguins hold a record of 26-25. In this year's playoffs when a series has been tied 2-2, the team who won game five has gone on to win the series each time (5-0 series record).
- Erik Karlsson, Mike Hoffman, Clarke MacArthur, and Bobby Ryan all carry mini two-game point streaks into this afternoon.
- You can catch today's game at 3:00pm ET on NBC, CBC, TVAS
