Saying Goodbye for now

After almost 3 years at Silver Seven Sens, Trevor Shackles is leaving the site for a new opportunity

It’s been about four and a half years since I first began writing about hockey. I have also been at Silver Seven Sens since August 2015, and I’ve loved every single day of it.

As a Senators fan who lives out in Richmond, British Columbia, I haven’t interacted with that many Senators fans in person, besides a few that I had met at Canucks games. For most of my life, I felt like I had been the only person cheering for this team, but that changed when I began writing about them.

Since the fall of 2014, I’ve had to create a completely new Twitter with none of my followers being actual friends, and I have written for two Senators websites (Senshot and Silver Seven). It’s been a gradual process since then, but now I truly do feel a part of this fanbase and community, and that is all due to this amazing opportunity I have been given to write.

So before I say my main message, thank you to everyone who has made this experience so enjoyable.

It hasn’t always been smooth sailing in terms of the Senators on-ice product or in terms of some disagreements with people, but at the end of the day, I have always been extremely grateful that I have this platform to express myself. Essentially everyone who reads my work are fans of the same team, so even though there are the usual characters who like to be contrarians with me (you know who you are), I still appreciate the feedback.

Because the thing is, I’d rather have lots of interaction than no interaction, and you can’t possibly always have everyone agreeing with you. Plus I never take an argument personally on here, as we’re ultimately still on the same side.

You can tell where I’m going with this, and that is that sadly today will be my last day as a full-time writer on this site, as I have accepted a position elsewhere. It is definitely bittersweet, because SB Nation is such a great site due to its slick design, its hundreds of incredible writers, and of course its passionate readers. It was not a decision that I made easily, as even as recently as two weeks ago, I wasn’t looking to go anywhere.

I will now be the Senators blogger at Hockeybuzz, which is very exciting because Travis Yost was the very first Ottawa blogger I read when he was on the site. The workload will be a lot more than Silver Seven, although I still hope to have the occasional guest post here or there.

I’m sure there are some of you who read both of these blogs, and some who never read Hockeybuzz. I hope that some of you can still continue to read my articles, as I’ll be sure to have more content than ever. Having said that, I know that Silver Seven will obviously still be a quality website, and the readers are lucky to have the current staff.

I’ve had a lot of fun writing articles on the Sens Twitter Bracket, Erik Karlsson’s brilliance, revisionist history, as well as hosting the Cost Per Pointcast (which will continue at Hockeybuzz). The good news is, since I’ll be the only Ottawa writer at Hockeybuzz, I can write on even more topics moving forward.

I have enjoyed my time here, and I have nothing but good things to say about the entire experience.

As I sign off for the last time, thank you to Travis Hughes and Ross A for hiring me, former staff writer Jeff Ulmer for advocating for me, my colleagues for making the site look amazing, and of course, the readers for making it all worthwhile.

You guys rock.

Cheers,

Trevor
