Senators by the Numbers: #30

Darrin Madeley G 1992-1993, 1993-1994, 1994-1995

Born in Holland Landing, Ontario in 1968, Madeley was an undrafted goalie after a successful college career with Lake Superior State University. He was signed as a free agent by the Ottawa Senators in 1992. Madeley played just 39 games in the NHL; despite signing as a free agent with the San Jose Sharks in 1996, he did not play for them, spending the majority of his pro career in the minors and in Europe. Since retirement, Madeley has worked for the USA Hockey National Team Development Program and is currently the Director of Athletics/Director of Hockey.

Mike Fountain G 1999-2000, 2000-2001

Born in North York, Ontario in 1972, Fountain was drafted 45^th overall by the Vancouver Canucks in 1992. He played for the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds and the Oshawa Generals of the OHL. He spent the majority of his North American career in the AHL and signed with the Senators as a free agent in 1999. He spent the last eight years of his career playing in Europe, retiring after the 2008-09 season. Currently, Fountain runs an arena and youth hockey program in Grand Rapids.

Mike Morrison G 2005-2006

Born in Medford, Massachusetts in 1979, Morrison was drafted 186^th overall by the Edmonton Oilers in 1998. Morrison spent four seasons playing for the University of Maine before becoming the starting goaltender for the Oilers in 2005-06. When the Oilers acquired Dwayne Roloson in March, 2006, giving the team four goaltenders, the Oilers placed Morrison on waivers. He was picked up by the Sens and spent one month in Ottawa. He signed with the Coyotes in the off-season and spent the rest of his career in the AHL, ECHL, and Sweden.

Brian Elliott G 2007-2008, 2008-2009, 2009-2010, 2010-2011

Born in Newmarket, Ontario in 1985, Elliott was drafted 291^st overall by the Ottawa Senators in 2003. He spent four seasons at the University of Wisconsin, where he was a finalist for the Hobey Baker Award and led the Badgers to the 2006 NCAA National Championship. He spent parts of four seasons with the Sens, as both the starter and the back-up. His inconsistent play led to Ottawa trading him to the Colorado Avalanche for Craig Anderson in 2011. He finished the season 2-12 with the Avalanche and was not offered a contract. He signed a one-year deal with the St. Louis Blues in 2011. He had a record-setting 2011-12 season, winning the William M. Jennings Trophy (with Jaroslav Halak) and the Roger Crozier Award (for highest save percentage). Elliott's mask features a cartoon moose, in honour of Owen Scott, a champion moose caller, who taught Elliot the art.

Ben Bishop G 2011-2012, 2012-2013

Born in Denver in 1986, Bishop was drafted 85^th overall by the St. Louis Blues in 2005. He spent three seasons with the University of Maine, twice leading them to the Frozen Four tournament. He made his NHL debut for the Blues in 2008 but spent much of the next few years in the AHL, behind Halak and Elliott. Traded to the Senators in 2012, he covered for the injured Craig Anderson. Traded at the trade deadline in 2013 for Cory Conacher and a 4^th round pick, Bishop currently plays for Tampa Bay.

Best #30: Brian Elliott

Yes, he was inconsistent. Yes, there were times when he was really bad. But part of his streaky nature was that he could also string together wins. He did post two winning seasons for Ottawa and in this group, that's something. Plus, he netted the Sens Craig Anderson straight up.

Worst #30: Darrin Madeley

Yes, both Mike Fountain and Mike Morrison were also dismal during their brief time in the capital, but Madeley spent more time in the Sens net than any goalie on this list save Elliott and has 4 wins to his name (in 39 games). I don't like to pick on early Senators, but during his time in Ottawa he let in more than 4 goals/game. Ouch.
