Rob Ray RW 2002-2003, 2003-2004
Born in Stirling, Ontario in 1968, Ray was drafted 97th overall by the Buffalo Sabres in 1988. Known as "Rayzor", Ray made his name with the Sabres in the 1990s as one of the league's premier fighters. In 1992 he beat a Nordiques fan who managed to get onto the ice in a game against Quebec. Ray twice led the NHL in penalty minutes (1990-91; 1998-99). His tendency to remove equipment before a fight to gain an advantage against his opponents led to a rule change in which players had to have their jerseys securely fastened to their pants during fights. Consequently, the tie-down rule was often known as the "Rob Ray Rule". Ray had several fighting rivalries with other NHL enforcers, including Tie Domi, Jeff Odgers, and Ottawa's Dennis Vial. He won the King Clancy Trophy in 1999 for his humanitarian efforts. He was traded to Ottawa for future considerations in March, 2003. Since retiring in 2004, Ray has worked as an intermission and post-game reporter for Sabres Hockey Network and in 2012 he replaced Harry Neale as the Sabres colour commentator. He also co-owns a Buffalo area construction company with former teammate Matthew Barnaby.
