Senators by the Numbers: #34

Darren Rumble D 1992-1993, 1993-1994

Born in Barrie, Ontario in 1969, Rumble was drafted 20^th overall by the Philadelphia Flyers in 1987. He played in just 3 games with the Flyers, despite spending 3 seasons with the team's AHL affiliate. He was picked up by the Senators in the 1992 NHL Expansion Draft. After two years in the capital, he returned to Philadelphia. In 1997 he moved on to Germany, playing for the Mannheim Eagles for one season. Returning to North America, he would spend the rest of his career with AHL and IHL affiliates of the St. Louis Blues and Tampa Bay Lightning. Despite playing just 5 games for Tampa during their Cup-winning season in 2003-04, the Lightning had Rumble's name inscribed on the Cup despite not qualifying for such an honour per league rules. His last pro season in 2003-2004 ended prematurely as he became a midseason replacement as assistant coach for the Norfolk Admirals. Since retiring, Rumble has coached in the AHL and was an assistant for the Icelandic hockey team in the IIHF division II championship in 2013. In July he was named head coach of the Moncton Wildcats of the QMJHL.

Shane Hnidy D 200-2001, 2001-2002, 2002-2003, 2003-2004

Born in Neepawa, Manitoba in 1975, Hnidy was drafted 173^rd overall by the Buffalo Sabres in 1994. The journeyman NHLer played for six teams during his 10-year NHL career, wearing #34 each time. He was acquired by the Senators from the Detroit Red Wings for Ottawa's 8^th round choice (Todd Jackson) at the 2000 Entry Draft, June 25, 2000. Hnidy broke into the NHL with the Sens, playing parts of 4 seasons with the club. He was traded by Ottawa to Nashville for a previously acquired Colorado 3^rd round pick (the Sens would draft Peter Regin) in March, 2004. An unsigned free agent to start the 2010-2011 season, Hnidy rejoined the Boston Bruins on a try-out basis on February 23, 2011. Three days later he signed a contract for the remainder of the season, serving as a depth defenseman. Playing in just 3 regular season games in addition to 3 playoff games, Hnidy did not qualify to have his name on the Stanley Cup. However, he received a ring and a day with the Cup. Two weeks after his day with the Stanley Cup, he officially retired from pro hockey. Since 2011 he has worked as part of the Winnipeg Jets broadcast team on TSN Radio 1290.
