Senators by the Numbers: #51

This marks the first time in the series a number has been skipped because no one has worn #50 for the Sens (no one has worn #8, but that's because the number was retired on opening night).

Derek Smith D 2009-2010, 2010-2011

Born in Belleville, Ontario in 1984, Smith was undrafted after four seasons with the Wellington Dukes of the OPJHL. He spent the next three seasons with Lake Superior State University. He signed as a free agent with the Ottawa Senators in 2007 and was assigned to Bingo. He made his NHL debut with the Senators on February 12, 2010 in a 4-1 loss to the Detroit Red Wings. He played one more game with the Senators before returning to Binghamton for the rest of the season. During the 2010-2011 season he played nine games with Ottawa and was an integral part of the Binghamton's Calder Cup championship season, finishing fourth in scoring among defensemen during the regular season. On July 13, 2011 he signed a one-year, two-way contract with the Calgary Flames. His strong play early in the season led to the first one-way contract of his career, a two-year deal worth $1.55 million signed in February, 2012. Smith has played primarily as a depth defenseman for the Flames and cleared waivers in December, 2013. He currently plays for the Abbotsford Heat of the AHL.
