Senators Re-Sign Mike Condon
It’s a 3 year contract for the backup tender
The Senators announced the signing of a three year extension with goaltender Mike Condon today. The deal carries a cap hit of $2.4 million, and a back-loaded salary structure. He will make $1.7M in year one, $2.5M in year two, and will be up to low-end starter money at $3M in year three.
Condon played 40 regular season games for Ottawa this season, posting a .914 sv% and a goals against of 2.48 when you include his one game for Pittsburgh. Of goalies that played in more than 12 games (15% of the season), that ranks 31st out of 62 on save percentage and 22nd for goals against. Those 40 games did include a fairly impressive five shutouts, the same number as Craig Anderson.
With Anderson’s current contract up after 2017-18, the back-loaded structure of this deal feels like the team hedging their bets about him possibly being able to take over in the mid-term before Marcus Hogberg or some other “goalie of the future” would be ready to take over the starter’s net
With Condon signed, this may be the final nail in Andrew Hammond’s time with the organization. The buyout window closes on Friday.
