Senators sign G Nathan Lawson to two-way deal

The Senators announced today that they have signed Nathan Lawson to a one-year, two way deal. With Mike McKenna joining the St. Louis Blues organization, Ottawa needed to add some goaltending depth for Binghamton, and Lawson looks like a pretty great option for that.

In 44 games with the AHL's Hamilton Bulldogs last season, Lawson put up a .914 save percentage and 2.57 GAA, which are solid numbers for someone who is probably playing as a back-up in the AHL next season. Importantly, they're good enough numbers that they'll help to keep Robin Lehner motivated with some healthy competition in the AHL.

In an old post on Lawson's NHL debut, Justin at The Goalie Guild had the following praise for Lawson's game:

Lawson’s overall biometrics and positioning is well-suited for the NHL. He’s listed at 6-foot-2 and employs a slightly wide stance in order to appear even bigger in the crease. He plays slightly deep in his crease, but does an excellent job of challenging shooters and eliminating time and space when needed. I consider him a passive butterfly goalie with a strong sense of reading plays and pushing into pucks. He absorbs a lot of shots and has great rebound control.

Depth goaltending signings aren't flashy ones, but they're important to the overall health of the organization, and Lawson seems like a great choice to give the B-Sens another option this season.
