On the hire, Interim General Manager and President of Hockey Operations Steve Staios had, of course, nothing but good things to say.
“We’re very pleased to welcome Jacques back to the Senators,” said Staios. “Not only will his extensive expertise provide invaluable guidance, but his strategic vision and leadership are qualities that are certain to amplify our group. Jacques’ proven track record, the foundation of which was built here in Ottawa, will be of significant benefit to D.J. and our entire coaching staff.”
The younger generation of Sens fans might not be as familiar with the name, but those who have been following the team for a few decades will know Martin from his nine seasons behind the bench in Ottawa from 1995 to 2004. Under Martin, the Senators had a .561 win percentage and made the playoffs in seven of his nine seasons with the club.
With DJ Smith's seat feeling warmer and warmer, this appears to be a supportive hiring from Michael Andlauer and Staios, giving this coaching staff more resources to work with instead of dismissing them altogether.
As they try and take a patient approach in Ottawa, one of things that has crystallized for Andlauer/Staios is they want to offer as much support to staff — before making rash decisions.
