Sens select Maxence Guenette at 187th overall
Sens end their draft selection the same way they started it, on the defense
The Ottawa Senators have selected right hand defenseman Maxence Guenette for their final selection in the 2019 NHL draft.
Maxence Guenette is 6’1, hailing from Val D’Or of the QMJHL. During the 2018/2019 season, he scored 32 points (8 goals, 24 assists) in 68 games played. In a draft where the Sens have seemed to have reached in most their picks, Guenette was actually ranked 57th among North American skaters from the QMJHL; so maybe he’ll surprise us all one day.
You can never have enough defensemen in the organization considering the long development time required and the limited amount of players who truly make an impact. In the 7th round, this is a safe pick for a larger player who has a good amount of points as well as a Gold medal experience playing with Team Canada’s in the 2018 Hlinka Gretzky Cup.
He has been described as a steady defenseman who has complimentary offensive skills while also having great recognition narrowing down on offensive players on the rush as well as being able to use his stick quickly and efficiently for transitioning the puck. He has described himself as someone who models his game around Drew Doughty; hopefully not the sneaky attacks part though. It should be noted he’s already due for a Norris trophy.
