Silver Nuggets: A Draft Question

Sure, the season hasn't started yet, but in the blogosphere, it is never too early to talk prospects and draft stuff. Today, we have a philosophical question about the upcoming draft.

Yesterday we went through the painful process of having to pick between the Montreal Canadiens and the Toronto Maple Leafs as to which team we thought would do better. I hope not too many of you needed counselling, because yesterday's post was pretty much an awful game of would you rather. In the end, some of you sucked it up and voted, and the majority of you went with the Canadiens. Many of you, continued to hedge a bit with your comments, and princespanky does a good job showing why this is not an easy choice:

Voted Montreal

But it was dicey because Price has that brand new contract that he doesn’t have to earn now.

If Toronto mysteriously gets Luongo I reserve the right to change my vote.

Today I want to talk about the upcoming NHL entry draft. Yesterday I linked Central Scouting's mid-term rankings that had U.S d-man Seth Jones occupying the top spot previously held by Nate MacKinnon. Today's question is this: If you were named a GM of the team with the 1st overall choice, do you take Jones or MacKinnon? The #1 D-man or the #1 Centre?

Jones: Currently the top ranked player, but like Victor Hedman and Adam Larsson before him, the questions about the value of a top d-man come to the forefront. Jones has a big body and jumps into the play frequently, but would you take him first overall?

MacKinnon: He's from Cole Harbour, but he's no Sid the Kid. MacKinnon is a big boy, and he can REALLY skate. He describes himself as a puck hound, and that seems pretty accurate. He's been lighting up the Q for a couple years, and really seems like that #1 Centre that every team needs.

So, potential #1 d-man or potential #1 centre?

Dirk Hoag from On The Forecheck made this video explaining the CBA recently, and it's worth a view if you haven't watched it yet:
