Silver Nuggets: Butler buyout made official

We interrupt your regularly-scheduled WIML version of Silver Nuggets for a bit of breaking news: The Ottawa Senators officially announced the buyout of forward Bobby Butler, making the Marlboro Man an unrestricted free agent.

Although the move was expected after the Sens put him on waivers earlier in the week, I'm still a little surprised the team didn't want to give him one more opportunity in training camp to show his stuff. However, considering the role he had last season and the number of contracts the team's already got on the books, the move can't be seen as too much of a shocker.

With pretty reasonable offensive numbers (37P in 94GP), don't be surprised to see Butler get picked up in short order by a team looking for a player with good potential. In the comments section at The 6th Sens, the possibility of the Islanders signing Butler as a cheap replacement for P.-A. Parenteau was brought up, and that seems like a fit as good as any other.

Where do you think Butler might end up?

  • Just as the Nuggets were going up asking if he'd finish the season in Ottawa, Bobby Butler was placed on waivers for the purposes of a buy-out. [6thSens]

  • Bobby Orr sits down and talks Sens hockey and about minor hockey. Unsurprisingly he speaks highly of client Jason Spezza, but also has some nice things to say about Erik Karlsson. [Panzeri]

League News:

  • Canes snatched Alexander Semin off the market, and I can't help but think other teams missed the boat. With Jeff Skinner and the Staal brothers, not to mention Jussi Jokinen and Tuomo Ruutu, the Canes have themselves quite a solid top 6. [NHL]
  • More labour stuff, this time, pensions and training camps. [Globe]
  • Flyers have signed Jakub Voracek to an extension after a very strong season. He ended up being one of the better summer acquisitions for the Flyers. [CBC]
