Silver Seven State of the Union
An update from the site manager on the state of affairs as we prepare to cover another season of Ottawa Senators hockey!
The Ottawa Senators are a team on the rise. It's been a long time coming, but through the combination of an arduous rebuild, a change in ownership, and young superstars maturing, the optimism around the team is the highest it's been since...possibly 2007? Though there have been some great moments in the intervening years (the Sens were one goal away from a return to the Finals in 2017 after all) we really do seem to be entering a period of "Unparalleled Success". You're excited, we're excited, it's all extremely exciting.
As we are now just over a week from the start of the regular season, I want to take a moment to thank everyone for their support and to provide a quick update on the site and our plans. We are currently 100% reader-supported. We do not have any sponsorship deals, we don't sell your data, and we're not funded by a secretive, weirdo tech billionaire (though if one of those wants to get in touch, holler at me!). We exist solely because of this community.
Since we launched our subscription offering, we've been floored by the support. We could not be doing what we're doing without you, and I believe that it's an important piece of accountability to keep our community aware of developments with the site.
Here's a quick recap of what we've been up to since the end of our relatioship with SB Nation and launching our independent venture in April:
-As of this morning, we have a shiny, new site design that you're hopefully all enjoying. We're still working on an images license for NHL games (fingers crossed), but we're very happy with the look and feel of Silver Seven 2.0. We'll continue to make tweaks, and we also welcome any feedback!
-We've expanded our already deep coverage of the Sens by adding French content through our partnership with La Brigade. We have received overwhelmingly positive feedback about Stewart Sabourin's articles, and we're keen to announce that his pieces will now be running weekly throughout the season. The Sens' fanbase is multi-faceted, and we want to serve the community as broadly as possible.
-We're also committed to delivering high quality coverage of Ottawa's new PWHL team. Much like being a Sens fan, this is also an exciting time to be a fan of women's hockey in Ottawa with the inaugural PWHL season about to get underway. We'll be there every step of the way.
-We've added newsletters as a recurring feature for all of our subscribers as a bonus piece of delicious Silver Seven content.
All of this in addition to our existing comprehensive coverage of the Sens which will continue. You've thrown your support behind us and we've been working hard to reward that commitment.
This brings me to the only part of managing this site that I don't love, the part where I ask you to subscribe – if you can. To learn more about supporting our work, click here. If you are already a subscriber, thank you from the bottom of our hearts; your support makes it possible for us to do all the things listed above, as well as continuing to explore new creative avenues to make what we do even better.
We're here to cover your favourite team with our unique blend of fan passion and in-depth analysis. We're excited for the season ahead, and we look forward to sharing it with all of you.
GO SENS GO!
