The Best of Daniel Alfredsson: Seven Point Night against Tampa Bay

A look back at a record setting night for Daniel Alfredsson.

Daniel Alfredsson did so many things well during his time in Ottawa, had so many bests, and set so many records that it's easy to forget some of the feats that established him as the greatest Senator of all time.

Today's post focuses on a now mostly forgotten game on January 24, 2008 against the Tampa Bay Lightning. Alfredsson wasn't a kind visitor when he led the Sens to an 8-4 victory in Tampa Bay, on the strength of a seven point performance.

Alfredsson opened the scoring at 13:43 of the first period with his 30th goal of the season against Karri Ramo, to give Ottawa the 1-0 lead. Less than 30 seconds later, he assisted on a Jason Spezza goal and Ottawa was up by two. Just before the close of the first period, Alfie notched his second of the night on the power play and the Sens led 3-0 at the first intermission.

At 4:38 of the second period Alfredsson completed his hat trick by scoring a shorthanded goal assisted by Mike Fisher. An even strength goal, one on the power play, and another on the penalty kill and Alfredsson was done scoring for the game, with almost two full periods to play. Midway through the period, Antoine Vermette scored assisted by Alfredsson to make it 5-0.

A Randy Robitaille goal to start the third period was assisted by Alfie, his sixth point on the night. After a few Tampa goals and another Sens goal, Alfredsson recorded his seventh point of the game, on a late Jason Spezza effort. Alfie finished the game with three goals, four assists, seven points and a Senators record for most points in one game.

He was name NHL Player of the Week and 1st Star on the strength of this game, but more importantly, the scoring outburst launched Alfie into the NHL scoring lead and Hart Trophy talk at the All-Star break. Unfortunately, Ottawa's lacklustre second half to the 2007-08 season and injury trouble prevented Alfredsson from maintaining that pace.
