Thursday LNN: The Wrong Choice in Edmonton, a New Arena in Calgary and More
Thursday's Edition of the Links, News and Notes
- The Edmonton Oilers were just one game away from the NHL’s ultimate glory. Despite the animosity towards players like Evander Kane and Corey Perry, they had won over many fans. It seems the Oilers have enjoyed the brand of being a questionable team but this time they just took it up a notch. The Oilers announced this week that they've hired Stan Bowman to replace Ken Holland as GM. Bowman had been ineligible to work in the NHL until July 1st because of his role in covering up the sexual assault of Kyle Beach. If Stan Bowman can work in the NHL again, one has to wonder what lines can’t be crossed.
- While Sens fans await news of a potential new arena, the City of Calgary and the Calgary Flames have unveiled their plans for a new arena. The new design is impressive and getting people excited, but that budget may become an issue down the line.
- Joe Pavelski has announced his retirement after 18 years of playing between the San Jose Sharks and Dallas Stars. Pavelski went from a 7th round pick to playing 1,533 games scoring 1,068 career points, making him the 6th best US-born scorer.
- Team Canada is getting ready for the 4-Nations tournament by adding more NHL management experience. Kyle Dubas from the Pitssburgh Penguins has been added to the team as the director of player personnel while Tampa Bay's Julien BriseBois will serve as assistant GM.
- And last, but not least, Steve Staios appeared this morning on the Coming In Hot podcast in a wide-ranging interview. Definitely worth checking out
