Thursday LNN: Salary Cap Increase, Shattenkirk Retires and More

- If you thought star signings were getting ridiculous regarding contract value, we may be seeing a new level of cashing out in the upcoming seasons. Gary Bettman confirmed that the salary cap is expected to increase from $88 million to $92.4 million with another increase possible in the near future. The sensible thing would be to use the extra cap space to add depth to your team but it will probably just mean that top players just keep getting more.
- After being unable to secure a contract this summer, Keven Shattenkirk has decided to retire after 14 seasons in the NHL. Shattenkirk spent time with 7 different teams including the Boston Bruins and Washington Capitals but his most significant tour was in Tampa Bay where he won the Stanley Cup in 2020.
- The Seattle Kraken announced this week that their owner, David Bonderman passed away on Wednesday at 82 years old. Bonderman was able to hockey to Seattle and oversaw the overhaul of KeyArena into Climate Pledge Arena.
- There was a time when the San Jose Sharks were one of the most entertaining teams in the league both on and off the ice. Recently, they've been trying to get back to that era and it's happening with a sequel to their popular 2014 holiday music video!
- No need to be concerned about Team Canada in the 4 Nations tournament because Wayne Gretzky himself says, we are still the team to beat.
- Alex Adamd has a nice 1:1 feature with Jake Sanderson over at Sportsnet. Sandy was passed over for a spot on Tram USA at the 4 Nations tournament, and while he says he’s disappointed, he wasn't surprised.
- Hockey Alberta is hoping to compete with private hockey organizations who are gaining popularity amongst parents with hopeful hockey stars. They are working on changing residency-based registration with the new terms taking affect in the 2025/2026 season if approved.
