Thursday LNN: Lars Eller Traded, Team Canada Projections, 2025 HHOF Candidates, and more!
Links, news, and notes about the Eller trade, Team Canada's potential roster, the next crop of HHOF candidates, and more!
- Lars Eller has been reacquired by the Washington Capitals as the Pittsburgh Penguins sent him to DC for 3rd and 5th round picks. Eller won a cup in Washington and he played his best hockey there for seven seasons from 2016-2023. Are the Penguins going to start tearing it down?
- Justin Bourne of Sportsnet discusses where things stand for Team Canada before the Four Nations Faceoff. I'm not sure I agree with all the picks though, especially with including Tom Wilson and excluding Evan Bouchard.
- Looking ahead to the Hall of Fame candidates for 2025, there are a number of well-deserving NHL players who could make it in. There’s a cap of four NHLers per class, so many will be disappointed. Some of the top names include Joe Thornton, Zdeno Chara, Carey Price, Duncan Keith, Sergei Gonchar, and Ryan Getzlaf, plus our usual suspects who have yet to get in. It seems there's a bit of a backlog because I would put all of those players in plus a few more that are listed.
- Luke Fox of Sportsnet details Alex Ovechkin's chase to surpass Wayne Gretzky as the best all-time goal scorer. In it, you can see that all that matters to the fans is that he scores goals and always has.
- Utah Hockey Club will finally have their jerseys up for sale at 10 am ET on Friday, November 15th. Although it's just their temporary jerseys, plenty of fans will want to get their hands on one, especially because it will almost certainly end up being a bit o a collector's item.
- Goaltender interference calls are often fodder for heated hockey debate , and Sean McIndoe of The Athletic has a great story detailing the history of the "foot in the crease" reviews and why the NHL might be heading back to that.
- Starting tomorrow, EA NHL 25 will feature the PWHL and the 4 Nations Faceoff. It's pretty cool to see women finally be represented in not just the NHL but other video games as well.
- Sam Cosentino of Sportsnet has his November prospect rankings for the 2025 NHL Draft. It's no surprise that James Hagens of Boston College remains at #1.
- Calgary Flames winger Anthony Mantha suffered an MCL injury and is unfortunately out for the rest of the season. Pretty awful luck for Mantha who could have been traded to a contender at the deadline if he played well until then.
- The Toronto Maple Leafs’ win over the Washington Capitals yesterday featured an improbable four video reviews, with three of them getting overturned. Two goals were taken away from the Leafs and one was taken away from the Capitals. Toronto was able to win 4-3 in overtime anyway, but what a crazy result.
- Before the St. Louis Blues' game on Tuesday, they had quite a unique puck drop, with two members of the US Army rappeling down from the ceiling.
- To end it off on a light note, meet the newest Vancouver Canuck, Eddie the puppy!
