Thursday LNN: New Season Begins, First Female Coach and More
Thursday's Edition of the Links, News and Notes
HAPPY OTTAWA SENATORS' GAMEDAY!
Today's the day, friend. We're back. Here's what's going on around the world of hockey:
- The NHL season has officially started. Even though we still have to wait until tonight to get our Sens fix, plenty of action took place these last two nights including Utah's first game (and win), an impressive shutout by the Habs against the Leafs thanks to Samuel Montembault and a complete blow out from the Rangers against the Penguins.
- The Seattle Kraken have made history behind the bench as Jessica Campbell became the first-ever female assistant coach in the National Hockey League (NHL). Unfortunately, the team couldn't get the win to mark this historic moment but it doesn't impact the magnitude of this achievement for Campbell.
- While the Ottawa Senators got their prized goalie in Ullmark, a former Senator goalie got rewarded this week. The Seattle Kraken announced that they have signed Joey Daccord to a 5-year extension valued at $5M AAV. It's safe to say that most Sens fans are happy for Joey finding his way in the NHL.
- Nazem Kadri hasn't had the smoothest journey in the NHL but for the most part, he's made the best of it and got himself a Stanley Cup out of it. As he settles in Calgary, the 34-year-old wanted to share his journey with fans through a book set to be released this month documenting his time in the NHL so far and the struggles he's faced with the Toronto Maple Leafs and beyond.
- We might be seeing more Canadian players go through the US college hockey system as the NCAA is working towards lifting a ban on CHL players competing in US colleges.
- ESPN has its big prediction column out, and they've chosen the Dallas Stars to win the Cup. Sens fans will be focused on the fact that Wyshynski has the Sens missing the play-offs yet again.
