Thursday LNN: Trade Frenzy, Suspensions, Extensions and More
Thursday's Edition of the Links, News and Notes
With the trade deadline upon us; here are a few of the biggest trades that happened this week
- The Oilers acquired centres Adam Henrique and Sam Carrick on Wednesday in a trade with the Anaheim Ducks. In exchange, the Ducks receive a 2024 first-round pick and a conditional 2025 fifth-round pick. The Ducks will retain 50% of both contracts as the Oilers are hoping these depth additions will help in this year's playoff run.
- The New York Rangers have added Alex Wennberg to the fold in a deal with the Seattle Kraken.
- Of course, it wouldn't be a trade deadline without the Las Vegas Golden Knights making a splash for themselves. In a 3-team deal involving the Flames and Flyers, the Golden Knights acquired Noah Hanifin from the Calgary Flames.
- The Golden Knights also acquired Anthony Mantha from the Washington Capitals in exchange for a second-round pick in 2024 and a fourth-round pick in 2026
- The Colorado Avalanche have been searching for the ideal second-line center for a while and they might have found their target in a trade with the Buffalo Sabres that saw Casey Mittelstadt head to the Avs in exchange for Bowen Byram.
- Sens fans are still upset about the Vladimir Tarasenko trade, not only did we trade one of the more effective guys on our team to a rival but the return was beyond underwhelming and retaining salary as well. With the way this season is going, this was not the trade Steve Staios wanted to start with. It seems Tarasenko had one destination in mind and Staios obliged. According to the Elliotte Friedman; Tarasenko would only waive his NTC to go to the Florida Panthers. In another round-up article from ESPN's Emily Kaplan; a rival executive mentioned that "This will probably be the steal of the deadline. I wish we had guys with no-trade clauses who only wanted to come [to my team]."
As for extensions?
- The Vancouver Canucks have locked down their superstar forward, Elias Petterson in an 8-year deal with an AAV of $11.6M.
- Daniil Miromanov has signed a two-year $1.25M AAV contract extension with the Calgary Flames after being acquired from the Las Vegas Golden Knights.
And the suspension
- Calgary Flames forward Martin Pospisil has been suspended for three games for boarding Seattle Kraken defenseman Vince Dunn. Seeing the hit, I think I'm surprised it was less than 5 games but that's the disciplinary standards we're seeing.
In other news
- After entering the players' assistance program, Washington Capitals forward Evgeny Kuznetsov has been cleared to play. However, the Capitals felt the forward needed a fresh start and hoped a waiver call would find him a new home. Unfortunately, he cleared waivers and will now report to the AHL's Hershey Bears.
