Weekend Roundup: We Are Now A Tennis Website
Well not actually, but it’s been a pretty quiet news week around the NHL.
It’s been a quiet weekend around the NHL. Teams are just about done gearing up for the new season, and the RFA contract standoffs haven’t moved an inch. You know what that means... tennis!
- A huge congrats to Bianca Andreescu, who became the first Canadian to win a grand slam singles title, defeating the legendary Serena Williams at only 19 years old! It’ll go down as a major moment in Canadian sports history, and will hopefully be one of many for the young star./

- The Sens are in action too, with the prospect tournament wrapping up in Belleville later today against Montreal. After winning their first two games pretty handily, they’re looking to win the tournament for a third year in a row. You can find all the viewing information and our open thread at this link.
- An update from the last game: after going down in the final minute, it sounds like Joey Daccord is okay (pun intended). From Troy Mann’s post-game comments, he thinks “he’s going to be fine”. Good news for the netminder, who’s entering his first full professional season with Belleville./

- Thomas Chabot partook in the NHL’s annual media tour in Chicago, and naturally, discussions came up regarding his next contract. I’ll let the quote speak for itself:/
Thomas Chabot has one year remaining on his entry-level contract, but remains hopeful that talks with #sens will produce an extension: "I love being in Ottawa."

- Around the league, the biggest signing of note was Jake Gardiner finally inking a contract, signing with the Hurricanes for four years and $4.05 million per year. The interesting spin-off is that it appears to make Justin Faulk expendable, and as a right-shot defenceman, Faulk would fit nicely in the Sens’ top four. The unfortunate news is that he’s owed $6 million in salary this season, without any signing bonuses pre-paid by the Canes.
- PTO season is also underway. Nobody’s been announced for the Sens’ training camp yet, although they usually bring in someone, even though it’s never turned into a contract. Remember Ottawa Senators Chris VandeVelde, Matt Bartkowski and Todd Bertuzzi? Neither do I. Some notable PTOs around the NHL include Tobias Rieder and Devante Smith-Pelly with Calgary, Stefan Noesen with Dallas, and Drew Stafford with Minnesota.
- There’s still a decent handful of players without contracts who could also be on watch for a PTO, including former Senators Magnus Paajarvi, Dion Phaneuf, Tom Pyatt, Fredrik Claesson, Marc Methot and Erik Condra. Some other notable players: Jason Pominville, Brian Boyle, Ben Hutton and Thomas Vanek./
