Weekly Question: How Do You Feel About Zack Smith’s Time In Ottawa?

It had been a while since we had heard anything about the once beloved Ottawa Senators’ warrior Zack Smith. He was traded to the Chicago Blackhawks for Artem (Arty Party) Anisimov in 2019 after it was evident he no longer had a role in Ottawa. Smith never really carved out a place in Chicago and it seems injuries have gotten the best of his career as he announced yesterday that he will be officially hanging up the skates after 12 seasons.

While he did end his career with the Blackhawks, Smith’s memories and career are forever rooted in Ottawa where he was drafted in the third round and flourished to become a reliable contributor. He may have not always put up the big numbers but he always played his heart out and found ways to help the team out.

Like nearly every player before him, Smith was dealt a bit of a rough hand towards the end of his career. In 2018, he was put on waivers in a move that Smith said totally blindsided him and one that bothered many teammates. He later was taunted by Max Domi about the whole ordeal, but karma took care of that. Smith survived the waivers but a year later he was traded. I don’t think anyone objected to the trade as he his performance was on the decline but prior to those last few seasons, Smith had done a lot for the team worth remembering.

Smith’s career high season was 25 goals and that was the best we had seen him. Overall, do you feel Zack Smith met the career expectations fan had for him? What are your memories of his time in Ottawa?
